Anbe Sivam inspired Bala to make Naan Kadavul


Vijay TV Awards for Tamil films for 2009 was presented with all glamour and glitz on Saturday, May 29 at Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

Leading stars like Kamal Haasan, Karthik, Vijay, Suriya, Karthi, Arya, Prakash Raj, Anushka, Pooja, Ananya, Sneha, Poonam Bajwa and directors Shankar, Bala, Cheran, Parthiban, Samudrakani, Sasikumar, Rajesh and many others have graced the occasion.

Director Bala who received the Best Director award for Naan Kadavul from Kamal Haasan spoke at length on stage for the first time (Bala never speaks on stage even for his own functions).

He said: “It was Anbe Sivam, which inspired me to make Naan Kadavul. A dialogue between Kamal sir and Madhavan was the inspiration were Kamal states that -When we love others unconditionally without any expectation, we become Gods and says Naan Kadavul. This scene and dialogue was my key inspiration for making Naan Kadavul

Kamal appreciated this comment by Bala and remarked in his speech that rarely such magnanimity is shown by creative people in giving the credit to where it is due and said it is a good gesture on the part of Bala to accept Anbe Sivam’s influence on him.

The Kamal- Bala bonding had many people at the function thinking loud that it would be a deadly combo if they came together to make a film. After all both are creative geniuses and come from Balu Mahendra school of filmmaking!

Allu Arjun eyes the Kollywood market


Star hero Allu Arjun now wants to extend his popularity in Kollywood!

With the latest multi-starrer Vedam set for release on June 4, Allu Arjun says that his films have considerable sway in Karnataka, while the dubbed versions in Malayalam are doing extremely fine.

“The only thing is that my films are yet to reach Tamilnadu. For this, I prefer to do bilingual films. The foray might begin with my next film Badrinath. At the present time, it is very much essential for a hero to expand his base to the maximum extent,” he said.

Allu Arjun said that a lot of care should be taken in the selection of the stories for the bilinguals in Telugu and Tamil and that the script should match both the tastes. He observed that though the budget might blow up sometimes, it would sure bring sufficient revenues. He further opined that the commercial ads would also help an artiste to consolidate his market.

New Actress Tapasee (Tapsi) Cute Photos


Vetrimaran directed Aadukalam is expected to be one of the biggest films of 2010.

The role of the leading lady, opposite Dhanush, was first offered to Trisha but when the actress backed out, it went to Tapasee.

Tapasee (pronounced Tapsi), is a software engineer from Punjab, who is a rank newcomer to films and director Vetrimaran who wanted a fresh face as heroine says that it is her first tryst with the camera, but is a natural performer.

Tapsee , who have even developed an application for the iPhone - called fontswap - is all excited about her role as an Anglo-Indian girl in the film.

She is also doing a Telugu film Jummandhi Nadam opposite Manoj.

B Unnikrishnan`s another flick – The Thriller



The last movie from director B Unnikrishnan ‘Pramaani’ with Megastar Mammootty didn’t thrill the audience much, and so the movie didn’t work out well at the Box Office. But the director is not dejected and is getting ready for another movie even titled as ‘The Thriller’.

B Unnikrishnan is planning to bring in young star Prithviraj to do the lead role for this movie. Based on a true murder investigation that happened in the state recently, the movie will have Prithvi playing the cop.

The pooja of the movie was held yesterday at the capital city. Unnikrishnan revealed that his new film would be based on a murder investigation that was held in the state recently. ‘The Thriller’ will be produced by Sabu K Cherian.

Parvathy Omanakuttan in ‘Kandahar’


Last year's Miss World Runner-up Parvathy Omanakuttan, has earlier announced her interest for being in movies and has already completed her first Hindi movie. She will also debut in Kollywood shortly with the new movie ‘Uma Maheswaram’. But for some peculiar reasons she had been keeping away from Mollywood. But the recent news is that she will make her home debut with the big film Major Ravi's 'Kandahar'.

This major Ravi movie based on a true flight hijack, will also feature Amitabh Bachchan for the first time in a Malayalam flick. Featuring Mohanlal as the hero, the other new face to Malayalam, presented by ‘Kandahar’ will be Ganesh Venkatraman.

Parvathy Onamakuttan was originally supposed to make her entry with another Major Ravi flick 'Maadan Kolly', playing the heroine of Prithviraj. This project to be scripted by Sunil Parameshwaran was planned as a horror flick, which was to be put away due to some mysterious reasons.

Hansika Motwani’s lessons from Manisha


Bollywood girl Hansika Motwani has been learning a lot from her senior colleague Manisha Koirala on the sets of the Tamil movie ‘Mappillai’, which has Dhanush in the lead role.

“It’s going to be a rewarding experience that I would cherish for the rest of my life. Such is the cooperation I receive from my costars in the film, especially Manisha,” says Hansika, who is excited about stepping into Kollywood.

“Sharing screen space with Manisha has been amazing,” the young actress says and adds: “She is so calm and composed. She makes everyone around her feel comfortable. And Manisha makes acting look so simple and easy.”

Meanwhile, Hansika has been roped into enact the role Madhuri Dixit played in the 1990s blockbuster ‘Jamai Raja’. “It is an honour to play a role portrayed beautifully by Madhuri. I always admire her a lot and I am extremely proud and happy to be a part of the film.”

Shweta Menon says no to Avalude Ravukal


In the web pages of AllFilmUpdates.BlogSpot.com it was reported about the announcement of a sequel of ‘Avalude Ravukal’ with Shweta Menon, talking the lead role that Seema had played in the original of the seventies. But now the actress has come up with clarification that she will not be a part of the crew and will not play the controversial lead role of the movie.

Shwetha also added that she was never properly contacted about the role or the film, though the producer Hameed just made a suggestion of such a project over the phone, a few months ago. She came to know about the news only from the media and so won't like to be a part of the movie. Shwetha had made it clear that she and her parents had many discussions about this and have decided to keep away, as she was getting a plenty of calls from her fans advising her not to be in the role, which was once celebrated for the novel and bold attitudes.

Vijay has to compensate for his flops!


Ilayathalapathy Vijay is in a fix. A crucial meeting, of Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association (TTOA) was held in Chennai today (May 28).

TTOA has threatened to issue a ‘Red Card’ against the star if he does not compensate them for “the colossal failure of Sura as they could not recover the money that they had paid as MG for the film.

Says R. Paneerselvam, Secretary, TTOA: “We have tried to get an appointment with Vijay, but he could not be reached. All his recent films including Sura and Vettaikaran were failures and we lost heavily. The continued poor performance of his films has actually forced us to convene an emergency meeting. We are demanding that he compensate us with atleast 35 percent of our losses. We are hoping Vijay understands our difficulties and helps us out."

Paneerselvam and other members of TTOA made it clear that if Vijay is not willing to give a compensation, both his fortcoming films Kavalkaran and Velayudham will not be screened by any of the theatres in Tamil Nadu. They claim the combined losses from Vijay’s last five films was approximately around Rs 30 Crore!


Rajesh signs Udhayanidhi Stalin as hero!


It is almost confirmed that Udhayanidhi Stalin, who has been keeping away from being in front of the camera will turn hero.

Rajesh the director of Siva Manasulla Sakthi and under production Boss Engira Bhaskaran has been selected by Uday to launch his career as hero in Kollywood.

Please note earlier directors like Dharani and Murgadoss were sounded as director’s likely to launch Uday’s career as actor. But the smart guy that he is Udhayanidhi Stalin never wanted to do a film where he will be launched as an action hero in his very first film.

At the moment Udhayanidhi Stalin and his Red Giant are the leading producers in Kollywood doing two big budget movies with Kamal Hassan and Suriya with KS Ravikumar and AR Murgadoss directing them respectively. So in a way he could have himself launched as hero in a big film, but he wanted to keep it a low profile launch.

Rajesh had actually shown Uday a few scenes from his forthcomingBoss Engira Bhaskaran, which had him in splits. And when Rajesh narrated the one line script of his next film, Uday had no second thoughts about turning hero.

The buzz is that it is a light hearted comedy with no running around the tree. The shoot will start shortly.

Sury's Singam super in Mumbai and Pune!


Suriya’s Singam, has opened big in Tamil Nadu and rest of the world. The film has opened in 512 screens worldwide including 352 in TN.

In Mumbai territory consisting of Mumbai and Pune, the film has opened in 38 screens, the highest ever in recent times for a Tamil film.

Says a leading Multiplex operator: “After Superstar Rajinikanth’s Sivaji which opened even in single theatres and multiplexes in 2007, Suriya’s Singam has opened in 38 screens in Mumbai and Pune with 72 shows per day. With Hrithik Roshan’s Kites tanking at the box office, several multiplexes were able to offer more shows for the Suriya film”.

The film has opened to near full houses in almost all the multiplexes and the first show at 9 a.m. at PVR Goregaon itself attracted over 60 percent occupancy, which is higher than the kind of response one can expect for a major Hindi film.

Overall on day one, of its release, Singam has taken 70 to 80 percent opening on overall basis, which is much beyond what even a Bollywood film scores on the first day!

It is amazing to see the youth and families coming to theatres in full force on a working day. The charisma and power of Suriya can be seen at the theatres where youth and families are enjoying every moment of the film and Suriya’s powerful performance.

The film is appreciated by the audience for being a mass entertainer offering wholesome entertainment. It is engaging, and a clearly Paisa Vasool entertainer. With such positive word of mouth and excellent opening, it will pave way for a better reach and penetration for Kollywood in North Indian markets.

Jaya Bachchan turns down Rajya Sabha nomination


Actress-politician Jaya Bachchan has turned down a Rajya Sabha nomination offered to her by the Samajwadi Party, party leaders have revealed.

Bachchan, who was renominated for a second term by SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, sent a message from Istanbul.

The nomination for a second term was seen as a rebuff to Mulayam Singh's one-time close aide Amar Singh, considered a member of the Bachchan family.

Lara Dutta to co-host IIFA awards


Bollywood actress Lara Dutta will co-host this year's International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards at Colombo June 3-5 along with Boman Irani and Riteish Deshkmukh.

"I am not performing this year but will be hosting the show along with Boman Irani and Riteish Deshkmukh," Lara told reporters in new Delhi on Friday.

The actress was in the capital for the launch of international clothing brand Zara's store at Select Citywalk, Saket.

The actress looked stunning as she posed for shutterbugs in a short blue dress paired with pink sandals and a pink clutch. She has also given up her long locks for a shorter hairdo.

Lara's face lit up at the mention of Don-2 but she refused to divulge any details about her role in the film.

"Right now I can only confirm that yes, I am a part of Don-2 and I am really looking forward to working with Farhan Akhtar and Shah Rukh Khan. As for my role you have to wait and watch," Lara added.
