Kites Releases Released In India And Abroad

The much awaited movie of Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan starer ‘Kites’ is getting released in India and abroad. The movie also stars Mexican actress Barbara Mori. This is a movie that was in the making for almost two years and director Anurag Basu has presented the viewers with a unique combination of Western chase caper and Bollywood romance. While some critics have given a lukewarm response to the movie, the fans of the actors are eager to see the movie and it is expected that it will do good business in India in the opening week itself. The Greek god physique and those irresistible pair of blue eyes that the actor has still make millions craving for him. National award winning actress Kangana Ranaut is also in an interesting role in this film.

In ‘Kites’, Hrithik Roshan plays a character who has some shades of Grey and he pretends to be in love with Kangana Ranaut because of her wealth. He does all that the viewers love to see him doing on screen. He dances and romances Barbara Mori and also fakes romance to Kangana Ranaut with aplomb. Barbara Mori also brings freshness to the film with her acting skills and body language that has a flow of fluency and spontaneity.

The music of the movie is not that great and Rajesh Roshan has done better musical scores in his career.

Kangana Ranaut does not have much dialog in ‘Kites’ but as always she emotes well with her eyes and facial expressions and brings alive the quintessential spurned lover. The director resorts to the non linear storytelling technique and it fits well with the plot of the movie.

Kites could open the world for Bollywood

Set for simultaneous release on Friday on over 2,000 screens worldwide, including 200 in North America, Kites, starring Hrithik Roshan and Mexican star Barbara Mori, may well open the global movie market to Indian films.

"If Kites does even five per cent well of what we have thought, well, we have opened the door, not for me and my film, but for many young filmmakers in India," producer Rakesh Roshan - and Hrithik's father - said.

"They have good ideas, but they are not as good as producers because they are scared that 'No, no, this will not work'," he said. "So once you have a bigger territory globally and have an audience to see it, then you can take a chance to make a film like that."

Shot completely on location in Las Vegas, Sante Fe and Los Angeles, a re-worked English language version of Kites, presented by Hollywood director Brett Ratner, will open in several markets for the United States' Memorial Day holiday weekend beginning May 28.

Ratner, who offered to re-edit the English version of the film to attune it 'to US sensibilities' after watching the print after a casual dinner conversation at his house in Los Angeles, 'made the film a little crispier, a littler racier and a little faster', said Roshan.

He said it was all his idea to cast Barbara Mori, 'a very good actor, a very fine looking girl, a very stunning looking girl' after watching My Brother's Wife, a Mexican film that he 'loved very intensely'.

So director Anurag Basu and Rakesh Roshan went to Los Angeles to meet her. "She was very excited about the script and the screenplay. And then she was there in the film," said Roshan, who thinks she's par excellence.

Casting Barbara was no gimmick for Rakesh Roshan. He would not comment on 'those films' where foreign actresses were just one of the characters. "But here my leading lady is the main protagonist of the film. Getting some girls and some character actors in one reel or two scenes will not really make a difference."

He also dismissed the controversy about some explicit footage in the English version of the film in Indian media. "No, there is nothing. When I told them there is no topless scene, they printed one photograph of a backless scene," Roshan said. "A backless and a topless scene are two different visions absolutely."

So how did he think of Kites To make a film to release globally, "I thought the best story to pick up is a love story. And when kites fly they don't know who is holding the string - an Indian, an American or a Mexican".

The Mexican kite girl and the Indian boy 'don't speak each other's language and still they fall in love and we show that language is no barrier. Love has no language'.

Roshan thinks Kites will do well among non-Indian audiences too. "My gut feeling is that whenever you go out in a different path and make a film and make it honestly and put your heart and soul in it, audiences do accept it."

With many Bollywood films tackling unusual subjects, Roshan thinks Indian audiences have 'grown up'. "What has happened till now is that most of the filmmakers underestimated the audience. They feel, 'No, they will not understand'. But I feel today's generation is far ahead than what we think."

Roshan, who has for once handed over the directorial reins of a film starring his son to another director, said: "It just happened on the spur of the moment."

He liked Basu's Gangster and wanted him to make a film with Hrithik.

Basu thought Rakesh Roshan was joking when he asked him to direct the movie 'because I have nothing to prove. The only thing is we have to make a good film for Hrithik. It's my banner. So either I direct it or you direct it."

And does he see Hrithik crossing over to Hollywood? "I haven't made this film to launch him in Hollywood. I have made the film to show the global world how good an actor he is," Roshan said.

"And if a good character or a good role comes to him by a good director... doing an Indian film or doing a Hollywood film is one and the same thing."

Susanne is my best friend: Barbara Mori

Barbara Mori's Bollywood debut has created sparks, thanks to her chemistry with Kites co-star Hrithik Roshan. However, the Mexican beauty tells the TWF correspondent she was a bit nervous before meeting the Indian superhero

What convinced you to do Kites?

I was looking for something that would touch my heart. I had been reading scripts... a lot of them, especially in the US. I got impressed with Kites because it's a beautiful love story.

And when I met Anurag [Basu, the director] and Rakesh [Roshan, the producer] for the first time, they narrated the whole story [in mix of English and Hindi] and I fell in love with the script. That's why I picked this movie.

Giving Hrithik Roshan a Hollywood makeover

When Brett Ratner (inset) got ready to show Kites: The Remix to producer Rakesh Roshan and star Hrithik Roshan, along with executives from Reliance Big Pictures, the film's distributors, he was very nervous.

The man who directed Anthony Hopkins in Red Dragon and Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in three Rush Hour movies, admits that he wasn't sure if the Roshans would like his version.

Among other things, the 130-minute long film had been cut down to 90 minutes. "I knew it had worked out well when I saw a big smile on Hrithik's face," he says chuckling, in an exclusive interview to Rediff.com "He said, You did an amazing thing. I did not even miss the dancing."

The Brett Ratner version will have his name above the title, as in the case of his Hollywood films. Only a small percentage of Hollywood directors have that kind of a privilege.

Ratner, one of the busiest writers, directors and producers in Hollywood whose Red Dragon, Rush Hour movies and X-Men: The Last Stand have grossed more than $1.5 billion in the last 12 years (without factoring in inflationary rate), says he was not trying to "make my own film" with the remix edition.

"I have kept the style of the film-makers," he adds. "But I did away with most of the dancing because it was making the film too long for international audiences. I also got the American score added, and improved on the sound. The film sounded too thin to me. Now, when you watch the remixed edition you will feel like you are watching a big Hollywood action film."

He says he got into making the new version of Kites many months ago when Amit Khanna, chairman, Reliance Big Pictures, came to see him in Hollywood with Rakesh Roshan.

"They showed the film to me and asked what could be done to make it appeal to non-Indian audiences," he recalls.

"Of the few Bollywood films I have seen including 3 Idiots which I liked quite a bit, I found the length was too much of a problem," he says, speaking from his Los Angeles office.

"In Indian films, everything is large. They push the drama to melodrama, the comedy becomes broad comedy. It is not wrong. But it is a cultural thing. For an international audience, I wanted to turn Kites into a more compact film. It was clear to me, Rakesh Roshan and Reliance that this film should reach an audience that does not usually see Bollywood films."

He pauses for a minute, relishing the thoughts of the first meeting. "I gave them my opinion, and next came the tricky part. They asked me if I could take up the project."

Karan Johar extends New York holiday for Kites premiere

Karan Johar has extended his holiday in New York to attend the premiere of Hrithik Roshan-starrer Kites at Times Square on Sunday.

"It's a big film for the Roshans who are very close to me and Shah Rukh (Khan). The success of Kites is also very important to the film industry. I've a release I Hate Luv Storys coming up in July. And if Kites works, it'd mean favourable things for my films," said Karan.

The Hindi version of Hrithik and Mexican actress Barbara Mori-starrer Kites will have its worldwide release May 21, while the crisp and short English version, edited by Brett Ratner, will hit the screens May 28. The film is produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu. Reliance Big Pictures is distributing the movie.

Karan recently released the shortened version of his film My Name Is Khan in New York, and the edited version of Kites will also be screened there. "New York is an important venue for Bollywood. Shortened version of My Name Is Khan was released here last week. Now it's a shortened international version of Kites. So we are working towards the same goal of taking Bollywood to the West," said Karan.

Shah Rukh, who can't attend Kites premiere as he's shooting for Ra.One, made sure his wife represents them both at this important occasion in the Roshans' life.

Gauri travelled to New York with Hrithik's better half Sussanne and they shopped before the grand premiere of Kites. "Gauri (Khan) and Sussanne Roshan are here. We're having the time of our lives. I am not thinking about work at all. Just enjoying myself," said Karan.

Incidentally, Karan had gone to New York with the express purpose of writing his next screenplay. But he has drawn a blank. "At the moment I'm all geared for the Kites premiere. I can't wait to see it," he said.

Barbara Mori next in Zoya Akhtar’s film

The fate of her Bollywood entry ‘Kites’ is yet to be decided but the Mexican bombshell is becoming the choice of many makers of the tinsel town.

It’s been heard that Zoya Akhtar has managed to rope in Barbara Mori for her next film ‘Zindagi Milegi Na Dubara’ that will be shot entirely in Spain.

The movie has Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin in it.

There’s a strong rumour that Hrithik was influential in making Zoya zero down on Barbara for the role which demanded a Spanish face.

For the time being, Katrina and Kalki are playing the other two female leads for the film.

The girl found Indian men warm and attractive, she wishes to fulfill her dream of visiting Delhi and posing in front of the Taj Mahal when she comes to India to shoot for her next film?..........

Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori shooting in Maldives

Barbara Mori, who quietly arrived in Mumbai on Monday morning, left on Tuesday morning with Hrithik Roshan to shoot an ad campaign for Provogue.

The Roshans wish to keep her visit to this city (that the Mexican actress now knows so well) as low key as possible until she returns from the Maldives on April 22 for a series of press interactions in Mumbai.

Hrithik wrapped up the final few days of his shooting with Sanjay Leela Bhansali for Guzaarish before Barbara's arrival. Both Hrithik and his wife Sussanne gladly played Barbara's hosts on her arrival on Monday.

Speaking on her current visit to India, Rakesh Roshan said, "We don't want to create any unnecessary hype about her presence. But we do want to make it clear that we didn't sign Barbara for Kites because we needed any Caucasian girl. Barbara is not just a pretty girl. She is an amazing actress. You have to see her in Cosas Insignificantes where she had shaved off her hair. She is an outstanding dramatic actress."

Barbara spent Monday in Mumbai with the Roshans and left early on Tuesday morning for the Maldives, prepared to return to Mumbai to a barrage of questions on her friendship with Hrithik which, apparently, she is ready to tackle.

She leaves Mumbai on May 2 and will join Hrithik for the US premieres of Kites.

Hrithik Roshan's debut song launched on 29th March

Reliance Big Pictures and Rakesh Roshan's highly-anticipated film Kites unfolds yet another surprise! Kites marks the debut of actor Hrithik Roshan as a singer on the silver screen. To commemorate this, Reliance Big Pictures is launching the music of the film on national television by airing Hrithik's debut song 'Kites in the sky' in English, along with some behind-the-scenes footage on 29th March at 9.30 p.m. across 40 television channels.

In a statement issued to the media, Hrithik says, "I was nervous to make my debut as a singer, considering I come from a family that is well known in the world of music, but for this very reason my chacha [Rajesh Roshan] and director Anurag Basu were most certain that I could sing. I have given this song my best and honest shot, but I still don't consider myself a professional singer."
