After the success of other language remakes in Malayalam, producers are trying to procure new titles. The latest to join the remake bandwagon is Prithviraj.
Prithvi is going to do Kamal Hassan’s evergreen police story Khakki Sattai, the super hit Tamil film of the early 80’s directed by Rajasekhar and produced by Sathya Movies.
Pramod Pappan, the director duo is likely to be the Malayalam directors of this film, to be produced by Kichu Films.

Urvashi is back in a powerful and humorous role as the interfering mother of hero Bobban Kunchacko in Saa Kudumbum Shyamala. It is a family based humour film with lots of sentiments.
The film is to be directed by Radhakrishnan Mangalthu, the director of the super hit comedy serial Indumukhi Chandramukhi. The team behind last year’s big hit Ivar Vivahithirayal, producer Gopakumar and writer Krishna Poojapura are the people behind Saa Kudumbum Shyamala.
Urvasi after reading the script of the film loved it so much that she gave immediate dates. She feels the comedy and emotional elements has been mixed well in the plotline. The others in the cast are Bhama, Lalu Alex, Nedumudi Venu, Sooraj Venjaranmoodu and Salim Kumar.
Saa Kudumbum Shyamala, which has great title value is to start from May 10, and will be released on July 23, by Central Pictures Kottayam.

Beautifully textured and constructed, Karthik calling Karthik takes us breath-close to the central character, whom his new boss calls `a strange fellow`.
Plagued by his brother's death as a child, an accident he holds himself responsible for, Karthik's (Farhan Akhtar) sleep is usually a disturbed one.
Years of counseling isn't helping either. Fired after being bullied at work; invisible to office crush Shonali (Deepika Padukone), Karthik contemplates ending it all.
Just then, he receives a phone call, with his own voice at the other end. This voice tells him how to dissolve all of his problems and regain his life.

This glorious emotional spoon-feeding takes place morning-after-morning as Karthik’s phone rings at 5 am exactly. Things move on perfectly till he talks to Shonali about the calls, which he explains, has him on the other end.
Meanwhile this voice, that was guiding him on how to tackle the bullies of the world, becomes the biggest one.
What follows are suspenseful moments and twists that'll leave you shaken.
The first half follows a relaxed pace; rare for a thriller. It establishes how the underdog character, an IIM-topper and diligent worker, snatches back the respect he knows he deserves.
The second half is where the thrills come in.
Unfortunately the premise is built on flimsy foundation. We're not sure of Karthik's background in terms of his parents, childhood (hurriedly wrapped up), and growing up. The explanation of how the voice-on-the-other-end knows things about other people is implausible.
The doctor's dialogue, the part where it all comes together, is conceptualised passionlessly. This was supposed to be the big jolt; the part where the audience pieces together the puzzle, or solves the Rubik's cube in this case; but it leaves us unmoved. It's like a great joke where the punch line falls flat.
Characterisations are superb with nuances borrowed from young, urban India. Take Shonali for instance: a compulsive smoker, with a great career as an architect, and a tumultuous love life punctuated by too many bad relationships.
Karthik with his hunched back and eager-to-please demeanour is the typical pushover. He is what Shonali calls a 'safe boy', a term he's not sure he's thrilled about. But she means it as a compliment after all the "jerks" she's met.
Complex, fun, bright, this is a pair you absolutely love. It is to advertising professional-turned writer-director Vijay Lalwani's credit for making his character so likeable and real. Lalwani's storytelling is unconventional, fresh, and honest.
He draws you into the story gradually, pretty much building the premise and the character sketches through the first half; while making the second half taut and suspenseful.
The film has an accomplished technical crew. Cinematography by Sanu Varghese, Aarti Bajaj's editing, Baylon Fonseca's sound are all superlative. Music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is melodious with lovely words by Javed Akhtar.
Farhan Akhtar, jack and master of all trades, is as impressive an actor as he is a filmmaker. He essays his character, that the viewer is at once sympathetic to and wary of, with remarkable control.
Deepika is fab. She enacts her role earnestly making it real and identifiable. The lack of drop-dead gorgeousness is exactly what works; her casual, everyday prettiness is absolutely charming.
For those familiar with Hollywood, this concept is an idea too late; you might not find Karthik calling Karthik all that exciting, having watched several films along the same lines. For others, this story may seem a fresh incentive indeed.
Either way, the film is worth your time for the gripping storytelling and marvelous performances. Recommended!
Tamil actor Prabhu who did a few Malayalam films as a character actor will be seen as a full-fledged hero in the new movie ‘Best Of Luck’. Directed by M A Nishad after his much applauded ‘Vairam’, the movie will have another popular Tamil-Malayalam actress Urvashi in the female lead.
It is for the first time that these two senior actors are getting paired in a Mollywood movie. Prabhu and Urvashi pair was a successful young pair in the eighties in Tamil films.
‘Best Of Luck’ will be scripted by the director himself while Vinu Kiriyath will handle the dialogues. ‘Rithu’ fame Asif Ali, Reema Kallingal, ‘Neelathamara’ fame Kailas and Archana Kavi are also a part of this project. The movie will be launched 27th of this month at Kochi.

The Malayalam movie industry, which has served more controversy than profits in recent times, has plunged to a new low with a squabble in which the choice of words are more appalling than some that are spoken on screen.
At the heart of the latest controversy is an allegation by veteran actor Thilakan that some big names in the industry are conspiring to deny him opportunities. But the issue has changed course - in true filmy style - and turned into a personal squabble between leading star Mohanlal and octogenarian writer and social critic Sukumar Azhikode.
Azhikode has been hinting that it is high time that the leading stars of Malayalam stepped aside in deference to their age and girth, and the comment has brought the writer into an open confrontation with Mohanlal, with the Thilakan issue acting as the trigger-point.
Admittedly, Malayalam movie actors are on the bulkier side in comparison to their peers in other language movies, and six packs are as rare as chicken’s teeth in Mollywood, even among the younger crop of actors. That, however, hasn’t dulled their appeal among their fans at home and the non-resident Malayali diaspora across the world.
Picking on Azhikode’s claim that he had got Mohanlal to sit across the table with Thilakan and sort matters out, Mohanlal said he had said no such thing, and that Azhikode must be having some “hallucination”. Not content with that, the thespian said he considered Azhikode’s statements as some “aged uncle’s joke”, and that whether he should stop acting was not a matter for Azhikode to decide.
Piqued by Mohanlal’s tart comments, Azhikode reminded the actor that he was himself ageing, that if some of his nubile heroines saw him without makeup, “they will faint”, and that he should take a leaf out of the books of Tamil stars like Rajnikant and Kamal Hassan and go around without makeup.
That observation was met with matching acidity by one of Azhikode’s own ilk, writer T Padmanabhan, who said Azhikode appeared to be envious of handsome people, and that he had no business to suggest that the veteran actors should call it a day.
Perhaps the only point that could go in favour of Azhikode is the fact that movies featuring the two lead actors in Mollywood, Mohanlal and Mammootty, have not been the ones that have earned profits for their producers. Industry sources say that the five films that are known to have made money in the recent past, To Harihar Nagar, Makante Achan, Neelathamara, Bhagyadevatha and Passenger, did not feature either of the mega stars. Neither does Mollywood appear likely to benefit from the latest spat that involves a superstar and a super scribe.
Meera Jasmine is making a comeback after a year with Patinte Palazhi directed by Rajiv Anchal.She plays the role of a leading playback singer who is lonely at the top. Jagathy Sreekumar will play her dad, and Revathy will play an important role along with Nedumudi Venu, and Manoj K Jayan.
Says director Rajiv Anchal, "When I wrote the story I had Meera in my mind and only she can do this character of a great singer. Music will play an important role in the film. ONV’s lyrics are to be tuned by debutant Dr. Suresh Manimala."

Ajmal has a reason to be glad. The young actor is going to play a double role for the first time in his career. Titled ‘Karuppanpatti’, the movie will be directed by Prabhu, a former associate of Shankar.
If sources are to be believed, Ajmal’s two roles in the film will be totally different from each other. “One will be a young father of the early 1970s and the other will be the modern son of 2010,” sources add.
The film, sources say, will be set in two backdrops- that of a village and the city. “It will chronicle the life history of a legendary father and his lovable son, both played by Ajmal,” they maintain.
‘Karuppanpatti’ will be produced by Sundar. Cinematography is by P G Muthaiah of ‘Kanden Kadhalai’fame while music is by D Imman. A search is on for a heroine. “A leading actress will be roped in for the role,” it is said.

Mohanlal is going to rock this summer, as he is all set to celebrate his 50th birthday on Friday, May 21, 2010.
He has an impressive line up of films to release between April 2 and May 21. On April 2, Max Lab will distribute Janakan featuring Suresh Gopi and Mohanlal in a cameo as a advocate. The film is written by veteran SN Swamy and directed by debutant NR Sanjeev.
On April 14 Vishu day, Mohanlal’s long delayed Murali Nagavalli directed Alexander the Great, produced by VBK Menon is slated for release in over 100 screens in Kerala.
And the biggest of them all the Joshy directed multistarer Christian Brothers featuring Mohanlal, Sarath Kumar, Suresh Gopi, Dileep, Kavya Madhavan and Lakshmi Rai is due on April 30.
Mohanlal fans have requested producers Anoop and Subair to release the film for his birthday falling on May 21, but they are not keen as monsoon season in Kerala starts in the last week of May.
Any which way you look, summer of 2010 will belong to Lal ettan!

With “Jayam Kondan’ and “Kanden Kadhalai’ turning to be successful at the box office, director Kannan has become the blue-eyed-boy of Kollywood producers. Apparently, the filmmaker has decided to deflect from his style and opts for another genre in his next flick.
Unlike his previous ones, his upcoming film “Vanthaan Vendran’ will be a full-fledged action thriller set in backdrops of Mumbai. The film features Jeeva in lead role and is produced by Srinivasan of Vasan Visual Venture. It’s noteworthy that the producer had earlier churned out Aarya’s “Naan Kadavul’ and yet-to-release “Boss Engira Bhaskaran’.
According to sources, Kannan has been in talks with a leading actress to star opposite Jeeva as the female lead. The only technician to have been confirmed for this project is cinematographer P.G. Muthaiah, who previously cranked camera for “Kanden Kadhalai’ –the remake of Hindi blockbuster “Jab We Met’.
Suresh Gopi is going to once again take the gun as a ruthless investigative cop in veteran action film specialist director Suresh Babu directed Kanyakumari Express, being produced by Pyramid Film International.
The story and screenplay is by another veteran crime story specialist Dennis Joseph. Gopi will play a role that he has mastered over the years- a no-nonsense hard hitting cop Mohan Shankar hated by the politicians and unscrupulous businessmen who comes to the rescue of a beleaguered Chief Minister played by Jagathy Sreekumar at a crucial time.
Says Suresh Babu: “Kanyakumari Express, will be an edge of the seat action thriller, with never a dull moment.” The cinematographer is UK Senthilkumar, one time Rajinikanth’s favourite cameraman who did films like Padyappa & Annamalai with the superstar.
Sonia Aggarwal the famous Tamil actress is rumoured to make her debut in Malayalam with this film. The others in the cast are Innocent, Babu Antony, Harisri Asokan, Sooraj Venjaranmoodu, Bheeman Reghu and Gowri Nanda.
The fans of Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal may not see eye to eye, but their idols are getting closer.
They have come together to fight the common enemy the veteran actor Thilakan who has been a thorn in their flesh.
Thilakan has been making some wild and unsubstantiated allegations against them. He has been able to get the support of the so called “left intellectuals” like Sukumar Azhikode and Punathil Kunjabdulla. Azhikode had criticized Mohanlal' for doing commercial endorsements for a popular jewelery brand and made a “dumb” remark that Mammootty had got Rs 5 crore to do Pazhassi Raja!
Noted novelist Punathil Kunjabdulla, went one step ahead and said at a literary forum that: “Thilakan is one of the most distinguished actors in the world, and before him Mammootty and Mohanlal are nothing!” The irony of it is that both Azhikode and Punathil hardly know anything about cinema or the contribution that M & M has made to Malayalam films.
There was a sustained campaign to tarnish the image of M & M by these so called “intellectuals” as they blindly supported Thilakan in his crusade against the stars. Please note some vested interests in Malayalam film industry are also behind this smear campaign against the superstars.
Meanwhile the two superstars met “accidentally” at the picturesque Panangad Choice Gardens on the backwaters near Kochi. Mohanlal and Mammootty were shooting there for their forthcoming films Christian Brothers and Pramani respectively. During the one hour post lunch meet the stars without any aides discussed about the “Thilakan threat to topple them”.
Mohanlal in an earlier interview to a newspaper had come to the defense of Mammootty by saying that he would never snatch a role from Thilakan. Later Mohanlal in an interview to a television channel said that he had rung up Azhikode and asked him to back off and leave him alone and not drag him into unnecessary controversies. And regarding Azhikode’s statement, that Thilakan and Mohanlal had expressed a desire to hold talks to solve the raging controversy the star made it clear that he had never expressed such willingness.
And as far as Azhikode's criticism that he is cashing in on his fame and popularity by doing commercial endorsements, Mohanlal shot back: "I told him to leave me alone as all stars including Amitabh Bachchan endorses products. I see Azhikode’s ranting against me and Mammootty, as those made by an old man.”

Now, she has been offered to essay one of the lead roles in the highly awaited “Raavan’, ace director Mani Ratnam’s bilingual film. Of course, it’s a double treat for the actress as working in Mani Ratnam’s film happens to be the cherished dream of every actor in Kollywood. The film will mark her debut in Bollywood as well.
Also, Priyamani has yet another reason to feel ecstatic. The actress has signed Ram Gopal Varma’s multilingual film “Rakta Charitra’, a film that has invited curiosity due to it being based on the life of the slain political leader Paritala Ravindra. She will be paired opposite the Southern superstar Surya in the film. The film has reportedly been shot in three different languages– Hindi, Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. The film is reported to be made in two parts with Vivek Oberoi dominating the screen space in first part while Surya will gain more prominence in the latter part.
